Description:

In this piece of art, Jesus is having his last supper with his apostles. In this picture, when I look at it I can see how everyone is in a commotion and disoriented. While all of the apostles are causing a scene, Jesus is still. This image is creating the idea that even when everything in life is chaotic, that Jesus is still there and he is calm and still even in the in darkest times. If you look at the piece carefully, you can tell that some of them seem to be mourning, while others seem to have gone mad. They are all overwhelmed with the news they have been given and they want answers and while that may feel like the best thing, Jesus knew that it would be okay, and instead of telling the apostles that, he would simply show them instead. People always say actions speak louder than words and in this case that is completely true. The artwork above is appealing to me because I feel like there is a lot of emotion in the picture. I enjoy the visual representation of people who aren't posed and are living their lives that way. My mother has this hanging above the kitchen table and has since before I was born. It is a picture I see most days and still I am fascinated by the work of this art. I plan to have this piece in my house as well when I buy a house and get settled in, it would be the perfect touch to any place home I believe.

Analysis:

This painting was done by tempera or oil paint. Leonardo took years to finished this painting, which meant it had been compromised and therefore, the pigment was not always the same or what he had intended. Also, the canvas had a grainy texture and was not completely smooth and flat, Leonardo would use a "smokey" effect with the oils to help with the texturing and transitioning. The transitioning is seem in the hallway as it get more narrow behind them, creating the illusion that painting is going back and not just flat. The shading also factored into the narrow hallway and the amount of light that was being let into the room. Leonardo made Jesus and the apostles 3 dimensional, which made the painting feel more realistic, like you are there with them.
